Race to honor late P.E. coach

PANAMA CITY BEACH — A race this weekend will honor a longtime physical education coach.

The inaugural Coach Post 5K and 10K race will be Saturday at St. Andrews State Park. The park opens and registration starts at 8 a.m.; the race starts at 9 a.m. The race is in honor of former physical education teacher John Richard Post.

“We have approximately 600 runners coming to Panama City Beach to run the race,” Anna Denny, a spokeswoman for the race, wrote in an email to The News Herald.

Post “has been a pillar in the community for many years teaching faith, family and fitness to the community’s youth,” she wrote.

Race fees are $10 for 1K, $25 for 5K and $30 for 10K. Park admission fees will be waived for participants. Complimentary “Coach Post run” T-shirts will be provided to runners and a post-race party will follow the race.

Post died Christmas morning at age 90. The physical education teacher had been employed with Bay District Schools for 43 years and served on the Panama City Rescue Mission board of directors for 40 years. Proceeds from the race will go to Covenant Christian School, where Post volunteered as a P.E. coach.

“This run will continue to help (Covenant Christian School) grow in all areas and provide tuition assistance opportunities to families who have a desire to educate their children in a classical and Christian education setting,” the school’s principal, Glenda Delmar, said in a race news release.
