Animal processing on Lynn Haven agenda

LYNN HAVEN — After discovering carcasses and several other unused animal parts under a Lynn Haven business, city commissioners Tuesday will be considering laws to regulate animal slaughterhouses and processing facilities.

Lynn Haven officials said they did not know of the unlicensed activities on the former site of Done-Right Deer Processing behind Sandi’s Seed and Feed on State 77. Clean-up efforts began on the property shortly after the discovery and commissioners adopted the initial 30-day emergency moratorium on slaughterhouses. With the halt on processing operations about to expire today, commissioners are looking to extend the moratorium during their meeting in order to hear the first reading of a law regulating those facilities.

Mayor Walter Kelley said the carcasses were discovered before they could cause issues with the sewer system, but public health concerns still necessitated an extension of the moratorium.

“We just want to make sure nothing else like that happens in our city again to protect the people of Lynn Haven,” Kelley said.

Commissioners will be discussing licensing, regulatory procedures and other specific concerns to be addressed in the city’s code during their meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. in City Hall, 825 Ohio Ave.

“Out of this there will be guidelines for those folks who want to operate one within the city,” Kelley said. “They’ll have clear guidelines on what they can do and what they can’t. Public safety is the number one priority.”

Commissioners also will hear public comment on two housing developments expected near the southwest corner of the Jenks Avenue and 26th Street intersection. Both subdivisions, Willow Trace and Ashlee Manor, are planned on 2.29-acres with 17 single-family units. Commissioners could take action on the final plats later in the meeting.
