PARKER — The City Council had a first reading of an ordinance Tuesday night to allow the city’s code enforcement officer to enforce parking violations.
The council approved changes to the ordinance, striking four sections because of redundancies with state statutes and agreeing to rewrite sections about towing vehicles. Councilman John Haney expressed concerns about changing enforcement from police to code enforcement.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea; I think it will get out of line,” Haney said. “The police do a fantastic job.”
The council will hear a second reading of the ordinance after changes are published.
Also Tuesday, Chief of Police Charles Sweatt demonstrated the city’s new camera system. He said two corrections from the old system were placing cameras by the rear section of the city recreation complex by the playground and another by the rear parking lot. He explained that officers will be able to watch live streams of any of the 19 cameras spread around city property in their vehicles.
Miller suggested placing a camera in Gilbert Park, specifically if a pier would be installed. Mayor Rich Musgrave said there might be a possibility the city will receive a grant that it could use for additional cameras.
Musgrave also gave a quick financial report, stating the city currently has a $270,000 surplus.
