Police late Friday night were investigating a hit-and-run accident where a witness said a man and woman fled from a Mercedes SUV after running a red light and hitting another car around 9:20 p.m. at the corner of 11th Street and Jenks Avenue.
A man in a silver Infiniti said he was traveling north on Jenks Avenue on his way home from work as he drove through a green light at the intersection. A dark colored Mercedes traveling westbound on 11th Street failed to stop at the light and struck the Infiniti on the passenger side, deploying the airbags and totaling the vehicle.
The driver said he knew the Mercedes was not going to stop when he heard the “tires peel out” during a quick right turn at the intersection. The Mercedes continued to drive away heading north on Jenks, leaving a trail of engine fluid on the road.
The witness was sitting at the Express Lane gas station at the intersection when he heard the crash. He said he followed the Mercedes as it sped away when he realized the driver was not going to stop.
The driver of the Infiniti was the only passenger in the car and was unharmed.
The Mercedes stopped a few blocks later, where the witness said he saw a man and woman leave the vehicle. The female passenger made a call from her cell phone and the couple was promptly picked up by a white car, abandoning the SUV, the witness said.
Police caught up to the Mercedes and have reportedly apprehended the suspects who fled.
