9:19 a.m.: The WCSO reports the school lockdown in Chipley has been lifted.
8:13 a.m. CHIPLEY - The Washington County Sheriff's office confirms that Chipley High School and Roulhac Middle School are on lockdown following reports that administrators heard "what sounded like gunshots" within the school's vicinity.
Emergency responders arrived on campus shortly after the report was made, around 8 a.m. Friday.
WCSO Public Information Officer Andrea Gainey reports the lockdown is mainly precautionary, however.
"There is no report of an active shooter, but the sheriff's office takes even the slightest possibility of a threat seriously."
"This is what we're trained to do," said Sheriff Bobby Haddock. "Everyone is responding as we would should there be an active shooter. Student safety is our first priority, and the schools will remain on lockdown until we are completely satisfied there is no threat to their safety."
Vernon High School also took precaution, implementing a school-imposed lockdown.
There's speculation Chipley's Homecoming festivities will be cancelled; however the WCSO anticipates that will not be the case.
"Homecoming will likely continue as planned," said Gainey.
