PANAMA CITY BEACH — It’s time to get out the checkbook and lace up those walking shoes for the local American Cancer Society fundraiser.

The Making Strides of Panama City walk to end breast cancer will go on rain or shine Saturday.

The 3.2-mile, family-friendly walk around Pier Park will begin with an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. at Aaron Bessant Park and end around 10 a.m.

Walkers may register online or fill out a registration form when walker check-in begins at 7 a.m. Walkers must also obtain a walker’s sticker prior to beginning the walk.

Participants are welcome to bring wheelchairs, wagons and strollers on the route, but are asked to leave pets and bikes at home. As always, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at the event.

Event coordinator Kyla Pugh said she expects the walk to draw close to 3,000 participants, including lots of breast cancer survivors, their families and caregivers.

In addition to raising funds to fight cancer, the walk also is a celebration.

“It’s a chance for the community to gather and support the survivors that we have with us, honor those that we lost and celebrate all that they’ve done throughout the year to raise money and awareness,” she said.
