Don’t adjust your computer screens, folks, the pink you’ll see this weekend is meant to be there.
We’re “Going Pink” in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month at newsherald.com and on our social-media accounts. You’ll see pink accents on the site as well as pink wallpaper on the home page and a pink News Herald logo on our main Facebook and Twitter pages. The initiative will take place Saturday and Sunday.
We realize some of you may send some barbs our way for the site’s appearance. We also realize many more of you will appreciate the efforts of members of our staff, both at this office in Panama City and on the corporate level.
The most important thing is to raise awareness for a disease that the American Cancer Society estimated would take the lives of around 40,000 women this year. We’ve included some local and national resources on a special Breast Cancer Awareness page on newsherald.com along with a link to donate to the cause as part of this brief change. The more awareness, the more support and the more funds will help in the fight.
In the least, this is an important movement because breast cancer touches so many lives. Many of us know someone who had breast cancer or know someone touched by the disease. And to those who have been impacted, their lives and perspectives are never the same.
My mother had breast cancer. She survived for more than 10 years before dying of other causes in her late 50s. She had the disease when I was a boy and it wasn’t until awhile after that I learned the full brunt of breast cancer.
My mother had a mastectomy after early detection. She might have had one fewer breast, but it didn’t make her any less of a woman. And she was alive because of the swift action.
Some aren’t as lucky and that’s why we need to fight the disease to the fullest. The day the number of deaths is at 0 will be a good day.
We hope you enjoy the changes and hope this weekend makes you think about what you can do to help in the fight. We’re “Going Pink” for one weekend, but we all should think pink every day. There are a lot of people counting on us.
