From Dec. 1 through Dec. 15, all eight NWRLS locations will participate in a Food for Fines food drive. Patrons may have $1 in current overdue fines waived for each can or package of nonperishable food they bring in. Food items can include peanut butter, jelly, canned soups, canned tuna, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, pasta, etc. The libraries cannot accept glass containers, opened packages, repackaged food, or expired food.
Library patrons who do not owe overdue fines are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for donation as well.
All items will be donated to local organizations that help fight hunger in their communities. The Bay County Public Library and the Springfield Public Library will donate all items collected to the Rescue Mission, the Panama City Beach Public Library will donate items to the Gulf Beach Presbyterian Church Food Pantry and the Parker Public Library will donate items to the Refuge Assembly of God Food Bank. The Corinne Costin Gibson Memorial Public Library in Port St. Joe will donate items to the
“Our goal is to help the people in our communities while at the same time providing our patrons with a charitable way to pay off their overdue fines,” said Robin Shader, Library Director.
Food for Fines will waive current overdue fines only. It does not include fees for lost or damaged materials, card replacement fees, printing costs, or credit for future overdue fines.
