Blood donors in demand this season

PANAMA CITY – This holiday season, the American Red Cross encourages folks to give a gift “that means something” by donating blood.

Tanya Holloway, external relations specialist with the Red Cross Central Panhandle Chapter, explained that at this time of year many people who normally donate forget or just do not have time.

“Long holiday weekends like Thanksgiving pose an extra challenge when many donors are traveling to be with family and friends,” said Jerry J.K. Tillery of the Red Cross Alabama and Central Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico and Southern Blood Services Region in a press release.

That’s why the annual blood drive at Bill Cramer Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC is so important.

“A lot of people are busy with holiday preparation,” Holloway said. “It helps a lot. It gives people in this area a chance to give back.”

The car dealership will host its 28th annual blood drive from 7 a.m.to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4 at its 23rd Street location. Donors will receive a commemorative t-shirt, Domino’s Pizza, a voucher for one free Krispy Kreme doughnut and a coupon for a pint of Blue Bell ice cream, while supplies last.

Holloway shared some tips to help avoid feeling sick after donating blood: eat an iron-rich meal before donating, drink plenty of water, get lots of rest after and “take advantage of the free cookie.”

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Eligible donors can learn more and schedule an appointment to give blood using the Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org or by calling 1-800-733-2767.
