The mysterious disappearance of Destin teen Jonha Campbell was solved Wednesday when investigators identified his body as the one that washed ashore Sunday on a Destin beach.
Okaloosa County deputies are still working to determine whether his death was the result of foul play.
Campbell, 18, had attended Fort Walton Beach High School for one year before withdrawing, school officials said.
He was last seen by family members at his Airport Road home around 1:50 p.m. November 20th, an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office news release said. The family said he didn’t show up at work later that day and didn’t answer repeated calls to his cell phone.
Campbell’s car, driver’s license, cash and debit card were located six days later at Destin’s Norriego Point beach access.
A boat captain spotted a body around 7 a.m. Sunday on the beach in front of the Eglin beach club, not far from where Campbell’s belongings were found.
But authorities could not immediately identify the deceased.
Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson said investigators considered requesting dental records from Jamaica to help identify the body, but were able to find another way to determine the dead man was Campbell.
The autopsy initially conducted revealed “potentially suspicious circumstances surrounding the death,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a release issued Tuesday.
“Those circumstances are not being released at this time,” it said.
