Report: More insurance options in 2015

PANAMA CITY — Floridians shopping in the federal Health Insurance Marketplace in 2015 will find more affordable options than in years past, according to a new report released Thursday by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

The report, which analyzes competition, choice and affordability in the marketplace, showed that nearly 80 percent of Florida consumers can find coverage for under $100 per month after applicable tax credits next year.

New customers can save during open enrollment because there are more issuers participating in the marketplace, and returning customers have the opportunity to shop around for lower premiums.

“The Health Insurance Marketplace is open for business, and Florida consumers have affordable choices for renewing their coverage and signing up for the first time,” said HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell. “In today’s marketplace, issuers are competing for business. With quality, affordable plans available, returning Florida customers may find an even better deal if they shop and save.”

Next year, the HHS cites about 25 percent more issuers in the overall marketplace. Florida consumers can choose from 14 issuers, up from 11 last year, and 42 plans, the report states.

To educate the community about health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital is hosting an open enrollment fair Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Representatives from Florida Health Connector, Inc. and Florida Blue will be available to answer questions regarding the Health Insurance Marketplace.

Kelly Isidore, business office director at Emerald Coast Behavioral Hospital, said the most common question posed about the ACA is about the cost of coverage.

While the process can be daunting, Isidore said coverage typically ends up costing less than most consumers expected.

“When they sit down and go through the process they’re very happy,” Isidore said. “Basically we wanted to organize (the seminar) to give back to the community and educate the community.”
