CALLAWAY — A Callaway resident may have to remove more than 50 chickens from her property if the Callaway City Commission passes an ordinance that restricts how big a flock residents can keep.
At its meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at 500 Callaway Park Way, the commission will hold a first reading of an ordinance limiting residents to six chickens per property if the birds are secured in a pen. Residents would also be required to register chickens, $5 per chicken annually.
Lynn Haven passed a similar ordinance, and its residents were not fond of the $5 fee.
The ordinance is presented after the commission approved a fowl permit for Sandra Adams, 1021 S. Comet Ave.
Adams said her family has always had chickens and currently has at least 62 chickens on the property. The commission first considered updating its chicken policy when Adams’ neighbor Michael Gandy complained about the large number of chickens Adams was keeping in a large coup.
Adams said part of the reason her family keeps the birds is for their grandsons.
“This is how we were raised,” she said. “We want to show them how to keep care of animals.”
