PANAMA CITY — Two new principals were approved Tuesday for Bay District Schools.
Becki Reeder will be the new Deer Point Elementary principal, while Holly Buchanan will be the new Southport Elementary principal.
Superintendent Bill Husfelt made the recommendations for the two new principals at Tuesday’s School Board meeting, which the board approved. The current principals of both schools are retiring.
Reeder and Buchanan already work within the district. Reeder was the assistant principal at Hutchison Beach Elementary; Buchanan was the assistant principal at Breakfast Point Academy.
Reeder starts July 1 and Buchanan starts June 1, according to School Board Chairman Steve Moss. They will serve for the 2015-2016 school year.
“I am deeply honored that the committee has entrusted me,” Reeder said of her new position.
Reeder said she was looking forward to learning from the faculty and students of the school. She added she was thankful to the Bay District employees who have helped her.
Buchanan said she has lived down the road from Southport for the last 15 years, so she knows and understands the community.
“I cannot begin to thank you enough for this opportunity,” Buchanan told the board.
There is something special about Southport, Buchanan said. Southport was where Buchanan said she started her career, previously teaching there.
“I want to give Southport Elementary 100 percent each and every day,“ she said.
In other action:
- Husfelt said for the next meeting on Feb. 10 there would be recommendations on pre-K education, which has previously been said to have shortfalls, and proposals to deal with beach school overcrowding.
- Moss said there would be workshops during the Feb. 24 meeting on health issues, attendance, zoning and substitutes.
