BAYOU GEORGE -- The county has closed its search for a new animal shelter manager and will begin reviewing applications.
The county received 61 applications while the position was advertised between Dec. 19 and Wednesday. No changes have been made to the job description.
The county has had a string of problems with the last three heads of animal control; all of them left in controversy within the last 3½ years. Most recently Carol Treftz was forced to resign in December after it came to light that she claimed to have a degree she never earned.
County spokeswoman Valerie Sale was unsure of the target date to get a new manager in place.
“We want to get the best candidate in there as soon as possible,” she said.
