PANAMA CITY — College and high school students may want to meet with an important figure in their planned career for direction and advice.
An upcoming event will give students a chance to do that — speed dating style.
FSU Panama City, along with Gulf Coast State College and The Career Center at Florida State, will host “Fast To the Future," a career exploration event for students. Students can talk to industry representatives in nine-minute intervals. It will take place Tuesday from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. at FSU Panama City’s Holley Academic Center.
The event is modeled after speed dating. Fast To the Future will host students from FSU Panama City and Gulf Coast State College. FSU Panama City Student Activities Coordinator Casey Lathem said Bay County high schools have also been contacted about their students attending the event.
“Students come to college because they’re interested in the end result: ‘How am I going to get [to a career goal]?' " FSU Panama City Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies Barbara Robinson said.
Robinson manages the Student Achievement and Advising Center at the school. Students can get a quick overview of careers at the event, Robinson said.
“There’s only so much we can do at advising," Robinson said.
For students focused on the future, Robinson said networking with someone in a particular industry can help a student. Businesses and industries scheduled to be at the event, 44 in total, include Anchorage Children’s Home, Waffle House and Powell Broadcasting.
Students also will be able to take a photo for their online professional networking profiles and get digital networking advice at a LinkedIn booth.
