The group went inside Alexandria and we learned a little more about its residents and how they survived (or how they miraculously did so given their talents).
The scouting process revealed Rick and Co. as viable “recruits” to make the place safer. This established community had a dearth of hardened individuals, however. Deanna, a former member of the good ole United States Congress, met Rick and explained how the group had the survival skills needed to aid in the longevity of Alexandria.
Of course, she was selling Rick on the prospect and like any new character in this show there’s still a question about her motives. Deanna had a creepy cadence to her voice, which didn’t help make her more trustworthy. She also was a little unhinged, saying she would have become a professional poker player if she didn’t win re-election because that’s a sound thing to do with your life and all.
Deanna conducted personal interviews with everyone, complete with a camera like it was an MTV Real World confessional. The group also was given the choice for houses in the community, which before the world went to pot carried a heavy price tag to own (800K to be exact). Carol questioned the giving away of houses, and rightfully so.
They decided to stick together early on, taking up sleeping bags and blankets on the floor. Deanna was impressed and went about her way of deciding “jobs” for after she dissected their brains some more.
Meantime, Rick shaved off his unkempt beard and received a haircut from a new character, a good-looking blonde named Jessie. He received some compliments on his cleaner look, something we haven’t seen since Season 1. How retro.
On first glance, Alexandria seemed like a nice place. Guns have to be checked out when on runs and safety is of the utmost importance. We’ve seen these types of rules before, however, and we all know how things turn out. We still have several weeks to find out more about Alexandria and any lingering secrets.
It’s obvious it will take time for everyone to acclimate to the new surroundings and new people. They have been on the road so long it’s awkward to have even simple conversations with others. That and most of the residents haven’t been tested like the group, which could breed contempt down the road.
Daryl was like a fish out of water in the upscale arena. This was well above what he was used to and of everyone in the group Daryl is the best equipped to be out in the wilderness. He even took a while to shower, but that’s Daryl for you.
Carl was introduced to fellow teenagers for the first time. A group of three welcomed him with video games and the lure of a pool table. It took him a second to understand what was going on, but he’ll be sharing his teen angst in Friday night gripe sessions soon.
Carol dressed like a soccer mom. Michonne complained about not getting a job. And Rick and Carl had their fix for killing Walkers after being cooped up a whole 12 hours.
We finished with the group asserting its dominance over two inept “leaders” of a recent run. Rick said everyone should spread out and pick a house. Carol asked what would happen down the line and Rick coldly said if the Alexandrains can’t cut it then they’ll take over.
We also know how well it’s gone when the group tries to take command. It won’t end well for everyone, including some in the group. Life is good right now, but there’s no such thing as paradise in this world.
The good times won’t last and possibly could be foiled by Rick. But, it’ll be fun in the meantime.
Quick thoughts: Daryl is a good house guest, but his choice for dinner could be better. But hey, beggars can’t be choosers, right?...
Life lesson: Never complain about getting a free haircut from a pretty lady…
Speaking of Jessie, the husband said hi to Rick in that special way husbands do when they don’t like other men talking to their wives. Ahh, tension…
Walker kill of the week: Tara skinned one before a double stabbing in the head…
Yes, Daryl, Carol did look ridiculous in that getup…
It would be best if the teens didn’t sneak out. I know it’s the “cool” thing to do but staying put sure beats being eaten…
Rick went back to find the gun he hid inside the blender before entering the town. It was gone, of course, which showed they were being watched as they approached…
Upon returning, he was given the duty of Constable. We’ve now come full circle to Season 1…
I think Deanna will play a power game in the near-future. She sees strength in Rick and Co., much more so than her people. She’ll use that to her advantage…
Speaking of power, this week's title "The New Bad Guys" could be used to describe Rick and Co. Wrap your head around that...
