PANAMA CITY — The Diabesity Action Team and Dance Life Studio are teaming up for a free Latin dance night Friday.

The action team is hoping the event will promote healthy exercise as a way to prevent diabetes or obesity. The event, 7:15 to 10 p.m., will be in conjunction with Friday Fest and chairwoman Cynthia Romano hopes it leads to future events.

“You can burn a lot of calories dancing,” Romano said. “A lot of times people won’t go to the gym because they have to go by themselves. We’re trying to keep it fun.”

Dance Life owner Jay Holmes said the group class usually costs between $10 and $15 and usually attracts 25 to 30 people, although they are expecting more for this event. It starts with instruction for 45 minutes before segueing into a dance party.

“The instructors start with the very beginning; they do a basic salsa step, a basic meringue step,” Holmes said. “We have teenagers to 80- and 90-year-olds attend these. Literally anybody on the planet can handle this.”

The inspiration for the dancing night is a club in San Francisco, Dance Out Diabetes, that has grown in popularity.
