CALLAWAY — Repairing water lines in the Sandy Creek area will cost $1.2 million, according to estimates by city engineering firm Preble Rish and the city Public Works department.
City Commissioner Melba Covey, who went to the Sandy Creek site, wrote in the agenda item for Callaway’s meeting — 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Callaway Arts & Conference Center, 500 Callaway Parkway — that it could be more.
“It is quite apparent that major repairs are needed on both water and sewer infrastructure in both Sandy Creek Ranch Subdivision and Sandy Creek Private Airship residential area,” Covey wrote.
Callaway residents have been asking about Sandy Creek for months, with the specific question about the cost of the utilities. The certificate of acquisition, filed with the Bay County Clerk of Court, states that on May 1, 2012, the services were transferred to Callaway without cost to the city. A deed was filed May 4, 2012, for $10. Residents, Planning Board member Bill Brown being one, have conveyed they were promised that Sandy Creek would not cost Callaway anything.
Covey recommends City Financial Director Beverly Waldrip — after the 2014 audit is finished — reconstruct and prepare separate financial records for revenue, expenses and impact fees for Sandy Creek available no later than Dec. 31, 2015.
Public Works Director Larry Johnson said the city is pursuing a grant for the repairs.
In other business, the commission is scheduled to consider: First readings for ordinances related to annexation and rezoning for the future Primrose Bay Development in the East Bay area.
- Action for sewer-only residents that have yet to connect to city water. Of the 81 applicable residents, only seven have received a water connection.
- Compensatory pay of $865 and administrative leave pay of $432 for former City Manager Marcus Collins.
- Going to one commission meeting per month.
