Local airport signs on for TSA PreCheck

WEST BAY — A special green checkmark on an airline boarding pass now means expedited security screening for the passenger.

TSA PreCheck, a new program launched by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), allows approved travelers to move more quickly through airport security by no longer requiring removal of shoes, laptops, jackets or belts.

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) offers a modified version of the program, which was opened to domestic travelers in December. More than 100 airports in the U.S. have signed on to participate in the program.

The program is open to U.S. citizens who are members of trusted traveler programs through U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and eligible frequent travelers who have no criminal record.

Those interested in participating must apply at a designated TSA enrollment center, where they will undergo fingerprinting and a background check. Applicants must provide documents proving U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and pay an $85 fee.

The only enrollment center in Bay County is at Port Panama City. Once an application is approved, the membership is good for five years.

ECP’s modified program does not have a dedicated lane for PreCheck as other larger airports do, but it still allows travelers to move through the regular security lines with less-invasive screening procedures.

Airport Director Parker McClellan said the program is designed to enhance the operation of the security checkpoint and improve passenger experience.

“We have received a lot of positive feedback on it and look forward to the opportunity to expand in the future,” McClellan said.

PreCheck travelers flying on participating airlines will see the PreCheck indicators printed directly on their boarding passes. Both Delta and Southwest Airlines participate in the program.
