PANAMA CITY – Bay County residents woke up to rain and lots of it Sunday morning.
By 12:30 Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Tallahassee received reports of 1.72 inches of rain at Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport and as much as 3.28 inches in downtown Panama City. Officials believed some areas may have gotten as many as five inches.
The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported high water on parts of Front Beach Road, Thomas Drive and Joan Avenue.
Officials said a “stalled frontal boundary” focused the storm’s wrath on Bay County.
Officials don’t expect any more thunderstorms after Sunday night, but rain showers may continue “off and on” until early Wednesday. A weak cold front is expected to move through the area Sunday night will likely push some of the moisture away, leaving dry, cool weather behind it.
Dorrie Bennett, who lives on Rhode Island Avenue in Lynn Haven, said her road floods anytime it rains heavily. Water filled ditches along the road and spilled over onto the street and yards Sunday.
“I had to get in the car to go get the morning paper, it was so deep,” Bennett said.
