Hooked on Outdoors: Catch deer off guard by removing your scent

Every deer hunter has his own idea of how a deer can detect him before it gets itself killed.

Most hunters agree movement will give them away quicker than anything else. But just holding still is only half the formula for a successful hunt.

Hunters today are paying more and more attention to smell. I know hunters who bag their hunting clothes in pine straw between hunts. Some will wash their clothes in scent-killing soaps in hopes of not giving themselves away to that great scent-detecting nose of a deer.

I’ve seen hunters change clothes after they get out of the truck before they go into the woods. The most popular of all is spraying yourself down from head to toe with a scent killer. All of these might or might not work. If a deer walks up and sits in your lap and you are successful, then I’m sure you believe in whatever it was you did before you hunted that day.

It’s sort of like a cat that leaves its tender sensibilities in the corner of the house and stinks up the place. You can cover that scent up all you want with sprays, but the only way you will get rid of the smell is eliminate it entirely.

Spraying yourself with scent killers, I believe, only swaps one smell for another. No matter what you use, it is not a scent that is normal to the woods. The deer will detect it.

I was talking to a photographer of outdoor shows, and he told me one of the best ways to cover up scent in the woods is eating an apple. Your breath will give you away quicker than anything else. It has been proven that deer can smell an apple 800 yards away.
But the current fad in the woods is to completely eliminate the human scent, like you would the cat smell. The only way to do that is with a device called Ozonics.

Ozonics is not a new concept to eliminate odors. Have a fire in the house, and the only way to eliminate the smell of smoke is the same device, just larger.

The Ozonics machine is not a cover-up as much as a scent destroyer. Deer hunters are more and more going to the Ozonics machine to eliminate the human scent. One hunter who uses the machine said he has had does almost stick their heads into his buck hut and not smell him.

Go down to C&G Sporting goods and let Ronnie Groom explain just how this machine works. By using the wind to your favor and trying this new scent-killing machine, I do believe you will increase the odds for a successful hunt.
