A 15-year-old Santa Rosa Beach boy was arrested March 11 and charged with poisoning a teacher after putting hand sanitizer in her Diet Coke can, according to his Walton County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

The South Walton High School student “willfully, with the intent to injure,” put “Germ-X” into his teacher’s drink, the report said.

His teacher became physically ill and went to the hospital.

Walton County Superintendent of Schools Carlene Anderson said the teacher was fine. She said school officials told her the boy was a “prankster” who never intended to harm this teacher.

“It actually wasn’t an attempt to poison the teacher even though that’s what he was charged with,” Anderson said. “According to the school administration, he likes to joke around.”

He is suspended from school pending an expulsion hearing, according to his arrest report.

The charge is a first-degree felony.

The boy was booked into the Walton County Jail Wednesday night.
