CAMPBELLTON -- A work crew picking up litter on U.S. 231 Friday found a roughly 6-foot by 6-foot sinkhole under the southbound lane of the highway just south of the border with Alabama near the intersection with Rambo Road, according to Florida Department of Transportation spokesman Ian Satter.
The crew contacted FDOT and the Florida Highway Patrol, and the road was closed for repairs, Satter said. Repair crews poured about five yards of “flowable fill,” which Satter described as being similar to concrete but without the larger stones, around 3 p.m. The road reopened to traffic around 4:30 p.m., Satter said.
The hole was revealed by a roughly 18-inch hole in the road surface.
