DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) — A poultry processing company has announced plans to lay off more than 500 workers at a facility in southeast Alabama.
Wayne Farms LLC officials said Wednesday that all the poultry slaughtered at its Dothan plant will be sent to AlaTrade in Phenix City. The company is one of the plant’s largest customers.
Officials say the deboning lines at the Dothan plant will no longer be necessary, and 560 employees are expected to be laid off by June 8.
Company spokesman Frank Singleton says the Dothan plant employs about 900 people and Wayne Farms plans to offer jobs to impacted workers at the company’s other facilities. Wayne Farms operates plants in Enterprise, Union Springs, Albertville and has two facilities in Decatur.
