PANAMA CITY -- Officials are advising against swimming after about 2,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into local waters, according to reports.

A sewer line blockage Thursday in the 2400 block of Charco Drive caused about 2,000 gallons of untreated sewage to overflow into a storm drain, officials announced Friday. The sewage overflow lasted about 48 hours with a large amount eventually draining into Robinson Bayou, according to Panama City’s utility department.

Florida Department of Health officials in Bay County are advising against swimming in Robinson Bayou between Frankford Avenue and the entrance to West Bay until further notice.

Sewage contamination of water can expose bathers to intestinal viruses, bacteria and parasites.

City utility staff indicated the blockage was caused by grass or roots in a gravity line.

For more information, contact the health department in Bay County at (850) 872-4660 Ext. 1268.
