Commission approves slaughterhouse ban

LYNN HAVEN -- A law preventing the operation of slaughterhouses and custom processing facilities in Lynn Haven unanimously passed during Tuesday’s City Commission meeting.

City commissioners approved the law after more than a month of reinstated moratoriums. The city imposed a moratorium after finding a large cache of carcasses and various discarded animal limbs under Done-Right Deer Processing behind Sandi’s Seed and Feed on State 77.

Commissioners also approved a lease-transfer agreement on 10 acres of city-owned land off of the 12000 block of State 77, near the Sand Hills community. The land is currently leased by American Sand, an asphalt production plant, and will transfer to Fort Walton Concrete, a concrete factory.

The city will begin negotiations on a 10-year lease for $1,500 a month with a renewal option on the contract after 10 years. The land is part of 640 acres of city-owned property adjacent to Deane Bozeman School.
