The shark appeared suddenly while the men were trying to reel in a tarpon, and chased the fish into deeper water. The men followed, and took video of the hunt, with one of the men risking a hand to get underwater footage.

The video was taken by Rob Caragiulo, brother of Sarasota City Commissioner Paul Caragiulo, who was on a fishing team participating in the a fishing tournament. The tournament is a catch-and-release fishing contest for tarpon and benefits Operation Second Chance, a nonprofit for veterans.
Caragiulo said the men had been battling the tarpon for more than an hour when the shark appeared as a large shadow from under their boat. “We all freaked out,” Caragiulo said. They let the line out, allowing the tarpon to flee almost a mile away from shore before the shark caught it again.
The tarpon was probably more than five feet long, Caragiulo said, and the shark somewhere between 12 and 15 feet. The men had hoped to save the tarpon from the shark but couldn’t. Tired from fighting the fishermen, it was caught and eaten.
