PANAMA CITY — A low pressure system and accompanying cold front approaching the Florida Panhandle will usher in strong thunderstorms Monday and clear the area Tuesday, with cooler weather settling in.
But before the sun and dry air — and highs in the 70s — can brighten our post-Columbus Day workweek, the Panhandle is in for a chance of severe thunderstorms, including damaging winds, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Scattered showers and thunderstorms were moving their way north over the Gulf of Mexico south of Bay and Gulf counties Monday morning, prompting special marine warnings and raising the chance of lunchtime rain for coastal areas, especially over southern Gulf County.
The thunderstorms could drop 2 to 3 inches over much of the Panhandle, according to the NWS Tallahassee, but amounts up to 5 inches are possible in isolated areas. The heaviest storms are expected late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Wednesday's weather is forecast to be sunny with highs in the upper 70s; lows later this week will be in the 50s.
