GRACEVILLE — A Bonifay man who escaped from Jackson County Sheriff's deputies shortly after his arrest has been apprehended, officials wrote in a news release.

Zachary Andrews, 25, of Bonifay, had been arrested in Jackson County after fleeing a deputy Sunday, but he escaped custody, according to law enforcement. About 11:15 p.m. Sunday, authorities received a tip about a burglary on North Holmes Creek Road after the residents of the home found a suspect entering through a window. The homeowner retrieved his firearm and confronted the suspect, who escaped with the homeowner’s pickup truck, according to a Holmes County Sheriff’s Office release.

Graceville Police located the stolen vehicle a short time later and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the truck backed into the patrol car, disabling it and forcing another patrol car into the ditch, officials wrote. The truck was located a short time later with the help of an on-board tracking system, and after law enforcement caught up with the pickup truck, the suspect, later identified as Andrews, crashed through a fence, traveled through a pasture and came to rest in a pond, authorities reported.

A Bonifay police officer crashed his patrol car into the pond trying to capture the suspect, who fled into the woods and was located a short time later in the swamp.

Andrews was taken to the Holmes County Jail to await first appearance. He faces charges of escape, burglary of an occupied dwelling and grand theft auto, as well as charges that are pending in Jackson County.

Two officers were treated and released for injuries they sustained during the pursuit. Besides the Jackson and Holmes County sheriff’s offices and Graceville police, other agencies involved in the pursuit were the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Bonifay Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol and Holmes Correction Institution K-9 team.

Below is an earlier version of this story:

MARIANNA — A Bonifay man escaped from Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies after he was arrested for felony fleeing and eluding, officials wrote in a news release.

Andrew was in a white Ford Mustang Sunday when a deputy spotted him and noticed that the vehicle was not displaying a tag, the news release states. After he was arrested, deputies learned that Andrew's license had been suspended and that he had methamphetamine in his vehicle. However, Andrew was able to escape custody and is still on the loose, the news release states.

When he is arrested again Andrew will be charged with felony fleeing and attempting to elude, escape, possession of methamphetamine and driving while license suspended or revoked.
