FORT WALTON BEACH — A judge denied bond Monday to the man accused of slaying his mother over the weekend at their home.
Michael David Watkins, 42, will remain in the Okaloosa County Jail and face the charges of premeditated murder and resisting arrest without violence, according to Okaloosa County Chief Assistant State Attorney Bill Bishop.
He is accused of shooting his mom with arrows and a gun and stabbing her with a knife inside the house located on Avon Lane in Mary Esther, according to his Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.
As of Monday morning, Watkins did not have an attorney.
A little more than a day before he was arrested for killing his mother, deputies were called to Watkins’ home because his behavior concerned his family.
According to the call history record, Watkins wasn’t being violent, but believed voices were coming from the television on Friday around 3:30 p.m.
He unplugged the device, covered it and then took it to the back of the house and rearranged furniture, the call record noted.
“This occurred once before about six years ago when he was off his (medication),” it notes. “He may be off meds since Monday ... not for sure.”
Watkins’ diagnosis was redacted in the call history.
When deputies arrived, they determined he did not meet the statutory requirements for a Baker Act. Under the Mental Health statute, there must be “clear and convincing evidence” that a person is a danger to themselves or others or that they won’t voluntary seek treatment.
In this case, Watkins willingly went with his brother to the hospital.
When deputies arrested him Sunday, Watkins said he killed his mother because she was trying to kill him and because she had taken his diamonds and given his father cancer.
As soon as the Sheriff’s Office wraps up its investigation, a grand jury will be convened, Bishop said.
Bishop expected that to happen within the next two weeks and for the trial to be scheduled sometime early in 2015.
“We’re working on the dates,” Bishop said.
