PANAMA CITY — Merritt Brown Middle School won all three grade levels when about 140 middle school students tested their math literacy skills Wednesday, gearing up for a regional math competition.
The local MATHCOUNTS competition was held at Gulf Coast State College. Some students will move on to regional in February, state in March and national in May MATHCOUNTS competitions.
The competition requires students to take four rounds of math tests, which include word problems from different types of math. Students who had the highest scores were honored with certificates at an award ceremony held at the end of the competition.
“We have fun with it,” said John Fant, math instructor at Merritt Brown Middle School and a coach for the competition. “But they also have the idea of the payoff … getting them in colleges and careers they want to go to.”
