The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) says the planned expansion of State 77 won’t mean four-laning through the town of Wausau after all.

FDOT spokesman Ian Satter says the recommended bypass will be to the east of Wausau instead. “We got to looking at it and decided it wasn’t in the best interest for the department or for the town of Wausau,” Satter said.

The current proposal includes widening State 77 from 1 mile north of Wausau to just south of Clayton Road (County 276). That segment of construction is scheduled to begin in 2019 at a cost of $20.8 million.

A public information meeting is scheduled at 5 p.m. March 18 at the Wausau Town Hall. Preliminary phases of the project are scheduled to begin in 2015, with construction slated for 2017.
