PANAMA CITYBay County families needing autism services can look to Florida State University’s Panama City campus this month for assistance.

During April, which is National Autism Awareness Month, the FSU Panama City Early Childhood Autism Program (ECAP) is raising funds to assist local families in need of autism services. ECAP, in conjunction with the Emerald Coast Association for Behavior Analysis, will host the fourth annual Auction for Autism Awareness from 6 to 8 p.m. on April 11 in the Holley Academic Center Lecture Hall of FSU Panama City.

Gift baskets with FSU memorabilia, weekend beach condo rentals and a variety of purses, sun shades, jewelry, artwork, and restaurant gift certificates donated by the community will be on the auction block.

All proceeds benefit FSU ECAP’s scholarship program, which provides funding to families in need of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services but who do not have insurance or financial means to afford behavioral therapy.

“Over the past three years, we have raised $10,000 for our scholarship program, and we are extremely grateful for our community’s continued support in helping our local children,” said Amy Polick, ECAP director and psychology faculty member at FSU Panama City. “Our program serves about 30 families affected by autism, and all funds raised by this event go directly to benefit these local families.”

Polick said the goal this year is to raise $7,000, which would provide more than 350 hours of therapy for local children with autism.

Recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates suggest one in every 50 people in the United States is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Admission is $20 at the door, which includes food, refreshments and raffle tickets for the auction.

Attendees to the event will be able to ask questions and gain information about autism services in the Bay County and surrounding areas.
